''Obduction'' introduces several new words and concepts, and its characters don't always agree on how to write about them. (Cyan has also not provided an official style guide.) This section serves to keep this wiki consistent from one article to the next.

  +
*The word "Obduction" should always be italicized when referring to the title of the game.
Hey guys, here's a list of everything we have to do. I got several suggestions from a friend and I discussed some of these in the Gamepedia Slack chat for members of this wiki. I'll mark in bold what should be prioritized. Here we go.

  +
**''Obduction'' - <nowiki>''Obduction''</nowiki>
*'''FINISH THE WALKTHROUGH'''

  +
*When linking the word "Obduction", the link should be directed to the ''Obduction'' page, not just the wiki's main page. ("Obduction" should still be italicized when linking.)
:*This includes adding step-by-step pictures to the rest of the walkthrough, a significant effort. We should finish and clean up the walkthrough before this.

  +
**''[[Obduction]]'' - <nowiki>''[[Obduction]]''</nowiki>
::*Cleaning up the walkthrough should also be a priority- Fixing incorrect/inaccurate terms, adding links, rewriting the whole thing to be more clear, more specific, and easier to walk through.

  +
*"Maray", "Kaptar", and "Soria" refer to both Worlds and the Cells which were taken from them. "Earth" is the human World, and "Hunrath" is the Human Cell.
*'''REFERENCES!''' References help to make sure we have accurate information and help us keep track of where information comes from.

  +
*"Mofang", "Villein", and "Arai" are both the singular and plural forms of the names of the alien species. For example, "There was one Arai, but there were a lot of Mofang." Again, ''Obduction'' characters are inconsistent about this, but this wiki needs to be consistent.
*'''EXPAND ALL ARTICLES.''' A lot of them are short. Check the '''stub''' category for some that have been seen.

  +
*"Mofang", "Villein", and "Arai" are also adjectives. For example, "Mofang technology".
::*We can use the [[Obduction: Exploration Guide]] to help us with this, and the documents. '''Do not just copy/paste!''' Rewrite it in better and more organized wording to fit the article. Paraphrase.

  +
*Page titles should be in sentence case. This means that you should capitalize the article title as if it were a sentence without an ending period. Only the first word and proper nouns/adjectives should start with a capital letter.
::*We should extrapolate as much as we can, but have definite statements.

  +
*Except for very short quotes, articles should paraphrase source material, not copy it. If context is needed, refer the reader to the source material instead. This should be easy, considering that the wiki has transcripts of all of ''Obduction's'' documents and speeches. (See [[:Category:Documents]] and [[:Category:Speeches]].)
*Find and put in all the Backer Reward Items in this page (create when ready): [[Backer Reward Items]]

  +
*References made using <nowiki><ref></ref></nowiki> automatically appear at the bottom of the article. Add "<nowiki>== References ==</nowiki>" (without quotes) to the bottom of the article so that they appear nicely in a section. This should not be done if there are no references because you will just be creating an empty section.
::*We should also find something to put in the [[Items]] page/category... It is empty atm. Maybe we should get rid of it and just have the Backer Reward Items as a solo article?

  +
*Add an infobox when appropriate. This wiki uses one multipurpose infobox (currently [[Template:CharacterBox]]) whenever an infobox is needed. Any fields left blank will not show up.
::*There are some complaints on the steam store page about the backer items being distracting to the puzzles, thinking they may be useful but aren't. include this in the page.

  +
*'''Proofread before you finish creating/editing a page.''' This will save a lot of time down the road. [https://www.learning.ox.ac.uk/media/global/wwwadminoxacuk/localsites/oxfordlearninginstitute/documents/pdg/managingyourself/1_guide-to-editing-and-proofreading.pdf This short guide] is very useful.
*'''Put a picture in every article''' that has a picture that is representative of that article.

* The [http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/RuneScape_Wiki Runescape Wiki] and [http://nomanssky.gamepedia.com/No_Man%27s_Sky_Wiki No Man's Sky Wiki] are great examples of what we can achieve visually and textually. Let them inspire you in your work here.
*Finish creating all pages. There are still some document pages missing (some are uploaded as pictures but have no page) and a lot of locations (in all the worlds- not just [[Hunrath]]) See below for a list.

*Make more categories if possible

::*In existing and new categories: Include some info in the category page itself about what the category contains.

*Make the pages prettier-

::*This includes adding more infobox templates like the [[Template:CharacterBox]], hopefully for every page that can use one. Infoboxes are for documenting specific things, used mostly in profiles.

::*Also, add more sections to make the pages more organized. For instance, in the case of many images for one page, choose one main image for the top right and have a gallery section with a gallery at the bottom. Trivia sections would also be great for less important information.

::*For headings, keep in mind: Headers in a wiki are intended as boundaries for that section of the article. An overly inclusive title deceives the reader into thinking there's more than there is, an overly precise one leads them to believe that certain information isn't there before even looking at the body

*'''We need to stop just copy/pasting document quotes onto other pages.''' We should be paraphrasing and extrapolating details, and improving the wording.

*Removed the mentions of the red/green bars in [[Obduction: Exploration Guide]]. Can't see them on the wiki.

*Need to advert the wiki more. This is up to [[http://obduction.gamepedia.com/UserProfile:SandovalCurse| SandovalCurse]] on the subreddit, but [[http://obduction.gamepedia.com/UserProfile:TheFloydman| TheFloydMan]] posted on other Cyan related forums about the wiki.

== THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND: ==

*Check out the [http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/RuneScape_Wiki Runescape Wiki] for exemplary pages setting a guideline to follow in new pages and edits.

*DON'T FORGET REFERENCES AND CITATIONS! Also helps avoid copyright (if not original work). If you quote or use info from a document or the exploration guide, cite it. Info from a recording? Cite it.

::* If a page has references, make a section (References) above the citations. Makes it look better.

*'''PROOFREAD AFTER YOU WRITE!'''Can't stress this enough. Please see this guide tinyurl.com/PrfReadPDF for help.

*'''We need to stop just copy/pasting document quotes onto other pages.''' We should be paraphrasing and extrapolating details(within reason), and improving the wording. The Hunrath residents weren't the best at writing. :P

*Don't use the word "Thus." Got a complaint. It was used badly anyway. You can search for it and see what pages it is one, try to edit it out.

*

== PAGES THAT NEED TO BE MADE (OR EDITED): ==

*'''Soundtrack!''' Separate pages for each song. Infobox (need to make) with the song playable in it, with Location, Duration, Composer. The page outside of the infobox should be general info and location played. See [http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/Dangerous_road] for an example. Make a Soundtrack category.[[Category:Soundtrack]]

*Fix all [[Josef Pieter Janssen]] typos. Lots of pages say Jannsen.

*Very low priority- try to fix all links to eliminate redirects. Doesn't really matter much, but I want to do it anyway.

*Character boxes on all new character pages if any more are found

*[[The Scrapyard]]

*[[The Trainyard]]

*[[The Gas Station]]

*[[The Sphere]]

*[[The Cemetary]]

*[[The Town]]

*[[Lake]]

*[[The Bleeder]]

*Move [[The Wall]] to [[Wall]] as it is a landmark and not a specific location

*[[Crankshaft Cavern]]- mentioned in the exploration guide. It's in [[Kaptar]], not sure where. Need to follow guide to see where it is

*[[Gauntlet]] -Mentioned in a document- not sure where it is (in [[Maray]], though). The maze, maybe? See [[Gauntlet Document]]

*[[Gauntlet notes]] GauntletAreaDoc.jpg

*[[Communication: Talking to Our Neighbors]] Document. Communcation1.jpg, also pictures of pages 2-4

*[[Lockdown list]] LockdownList1.jpg

*[[Battery Capacitor Log]] BatteryCapacitorLog1.jpg

*[[Villein panel worksheet]] There's another version of this somewhere with less filled in. VilleinPanelWorksheet.jpg

*The room below the tree/farley's community center- need pictures and might be missing a few documents from there

*Add a link to the subreddit in the main page and the sidebar on the left under Portals. Remind Sandoval about this.

*[[Obduction]] needs to be remade. Make it less of an infomercial and more like a wiki page. More factual. No need to make an advertisement there...

*[[The Heart]]. That's what all the trees are connected to. Maybe a picture of the room with all the stars below the trees?

::I don't know if this deserves its own page. The root room is clearly different for each tree, as the water has to be filled at each location. --[[User:TheFloydman|TheFloydman]] ([[User talk:TheFloydman|talk]]) 03:03, 5 September 2016 (UTC)

*[[Puzzles]]. Something we want to do or delete? Not sure.

*Probably more.

Thanks a lot guys. This'll get added on and some things will be taken off as they are done. No timestamp on my signature so I don't have to update it everytime.

Thank you for your interest in the Obduction Wiki. While there is no longer specific place for live discussion about editing this wiki, you can join the Gamepedia/Fandom Discord.

To Do

While Obduction is a small game when you consider playable hours, there is still a ton of stuff that needs to be done on this wiki. Here are our most pressing needs:

  1. Finish the Walkthrough.
    • First and foremost, the walkthrough is incomplete. Before polishing existing information, please add any steps or parts that are still missing.
    • High quality photos are needed. Please be careful not to overuse them, though. They should compliment the written material, not overpower it.
  2. Add all the new content introduced in the PS4 to the wiki.
    • There's at least two new locations as well as some new lore. This also means the walkthrough needs to be edited.
  3. Finish writing about specific Puzzles.
    • Our Puzzles page compliments the Walkthrough and gives users quick access to information that might be hard to find in a full walkthrough.
  4. Write about Places.
    • There are still several places missing. Places are divided into 3 categories: Worlds (planets), Cells (the large round spheres; there are 4 in the game), and Locations (specific places of interest, like buildings or other gathering places).
  5. Create Maps.
    • TheFloydman has created a few, but they can be time consuming, and he doesn't know if he will be able to make anymore or update the ones he has already uploaded.
  6. Flesh out Backer reward items.
    • While all of the items have been identified, many of the Backers have not been, and their explanations for the in-game items can add a lot of depth.

Please see Special:WantedPages for pages that are referenced but have not yet been created. Category:Stubs will list articles that need fleshing out.

Things to Remember

  • Use primary sources: anything in the game, the Obduction Exploration Guide, or messages or tweets by Cyan employees given officially.
  • Most fan theories are off the table unless they are well-founded and have a substantial amount of community input. Fan theories should be identified as such and not as fact.
  • Please upload photos without the in-game cursor in them. There are various ways to do this, including using the in-game camera and Nvidia Ansel.

Style Guide

Obduction introduces several new words and concepts, and its characters don't always agree on how to write about them. (Cyan has also not provided an official style guide.) This section serves to keep this wiki consistent from one article to the next.

  • The word "Obduction" should always be italicized when referring to the title of the game.
    • Obduction - ''Obduction''
  • When linking the word "Obduction", the link should be directed to the Obduction page, not just the wiki's main page. ("Obduction" should still be italicized when linking.)
  • "Maray", "Kaptar", and "Soria" refer to both Worlds and the Cells which were taken from them. "Earth" is the human World, and "Hunrath" is the Human Cell.
  • "Mofang", "Villein", and "Arai" are both the singular and plural forms of the names of the alien species. For example, "There was one Arai, but there were a lot of Mofang." Again, Obduction characters are inconsistent about this, but this wiki needs to be consistent.
  • "Mofang", "Villein", and "Arai" are also adjectives. For example, "Mofang technology".
  • Page titles should be in sentence case. This means that you should capitalize the article title as if it were a sentence without an ending period. Only the first word and proper nouns/adjectives should start with a capital letter.
  • Except for very short quotes, articles should paraphrase source material, not copy it. If context is needed, refer the reader to the source material instead. This should be easy, considering that the wiki has transcripts of all of Obduction's documents and speeches. (See Category:Documents and Category:Speeches.)
  • References made using <ref></ref> automatically appear at the bottom of the article. Add "== References ==" (without quotes) to the bottom of the article so that they appear nicely in a section. This should not be done if there are no references because you will just be creating an empty section.
  • Add an infobox when appropriate. This wiki uses one multipurpose infobox (currently Template:CharacterBox) whenever an infobox is needed. Any fields left blank will not show up.
  • Proofread before you finish creating/editing a page. This will save a lot of time down the road. This short guide is very useful.
  • The Runescape Wiki and No Man's Sky Wiki are great examples of what we can achieve visually and textually. Let them inspire you in your work here.
